(561701) Crop Technician II, Farm Coordinator, CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,595 – $6,694 per month (Step 1- Step 20), Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,595 - $5,384 per month (Step 1-9). Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations.  This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the College of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences Department.

Position Summary:

 

The Farm Coordinator coordinates the day-to-day operations of the new university farm space(s) and supports the development and preparation of learning spaces under direction of the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and in collaboration with faculty involved in the Critical Agriculture and Agroecology Studies program.

 

Key Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility: - 30%

 To coordinate and perform the day-to-day workings of the farm and potential additional sites.

This includes but is not limited to:

  • Varied physical farm labor
  • Managing equipment, facilities, and irrigation systems
  • Providing work direction to student employees and volunteers
  • Managing purchasing, requisitions, and procurement through P2P and completing related paperwork
  • Working with various tools.

The employee will also be responsible for coordinating with faculty and working with the Dean in scheduling crops and making the appropriate purchases of seeds, equipment, amendments, etc. that are required.

 

Curriculum integration & instructional partnership – 10%

 

  • Coordinate integration of the new polytech farm into academic affairs as a living laboratory and provide hands-on instructional support for faculty teaching in the Critical Agriculture Studies & Agroecology (CASA) program.

 

Hands-on class and capstone module set-up, breakdown, and materials staging - 10%

  • Pre-stage tools, supplies, demonstration stations, and any accessibility needs before classes.
  • Support faculty coordination CASA student capstones and applied projects as well as research and thesis activities, including space allocation, and end-of-project site restoration.

 

Farm Product Distribution – 20%

  • Coordinate consultation, harvest, and donations of fresh produce and other farm products to Oh Snap to include coordinate gleaning and planting with Oh Snap volunteers and employees and conducting consultative crop planning

Manage Sales to Chartwells-this includes but is not limited to:

  • Working with the chef to determine items for delivery, field washing items, delivery of said items, managing purchasing, and consultation with Chartwells staff to ensure we are meeting their needs through consultative crop planning

 

Operations & Safety: inventory, procurement, and infrastructure readiness – 20%

  • Maintain inventories and ordering for instructional and farm materials, and coordinate basic readiness of water access, storage, wash/pack areas, pathways, and teaching/gathering spaces.
  • Lead safety and compliance practices for farm duties and requirements, including food safety and soil safety practices where applicable.

  • Experience to be proficient in performing most or all work assignments.
  • General working knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to learn, interpret independently, and apply a variety of complex policies and procedures. Able to identify deviations from applicable policies.
  • Ability to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough and, at times, creative solutions.
  • Ability to perform standard arithmetic functions of a transactional nature, including tracking and comparing data.
  • Work often involves front line contacts with a variety of campus and community individuals requiring active problem solving and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in effectively presenting standard information in writing.
  • Demonstrated competence in understanding, interpreting, and communicating procedures, policies, information, ideas, and instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.

 

As related to the major responsibilities for this position:

  • Knowledge of agroecological, permaculture and/or climate- resilient farm practices crop planning & planting, soil and nutrient management, integrated pest management, irrigation and water management, equipment operation and farm infrastructure coordination.
  • Experience organizing and leading volunteers, providing basic instruction in safety training, tool use, and agroecological methods.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of people, including faculty, students, staff, and community partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt in a dynamic academic environment with shifting instructional, research, and production needs.
  • Experience with recordkeeping and digital workflow for schedules, budgets, inventories, volunteer tracking, compliance, research data, and outcomes assessment.
  • Experience applying purchasing and compensation policies and procedures or demonstrated ability to quickly learn and effectively manage these processes.
  • Ability to design and build needed farm infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to: Wash stations; compost bins; fencing; row fencing.
  • A demonstrated ability and commitment to ongoing learning of best and creative practices in managing and supporting a complex farm mosaic landscape
  • Budget planning and management: ability to provide projections and maintain a current record of expenses, encumbered costs, earmarks, and future resources

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Equivalent to 60 semester or 90 quarter units of academic work at a recognized college or university, including agriculture and science courses applicable to the production of general field and specialty crops.

 

Additional specialized experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of experience for each 30 semester or 45 quarter units of accredited college work.

 

Three years of progressively responsible experience in the production of field, garden, vegetable or specialty crops (orchards, vineyards, feed crops, etc.).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in traditional ecological knowledge, indigenous science, community-based farm organizing and related areas.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse management, irrigation design, farm biology and wildlife within a farm context, small-engine maintenance, and equipment safety training.
  • Research plot/trial basics: trial design, data collection, and reporting in agroecology/sustainable agriculture contexts.
