(Job #546955) Laborer, Custodial Laborer, Salary Range: $3,680 - $5,955 monthly. Hiring Range: $3,680 - $3,864 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Facilities Management – Custodial Services Department. This position comes with a premium benefits package that includes outstanding vacation, medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts, a fee waiver education program, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and 14 paid holidays per year. Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Custodial Services Manager and with lead work direction provided by the Lead Custodians in Housing, the Custodial Housing Laborer will perform general support to all facilities maintenance and operations departmental units within/adjacent to Housing buildings and Dining areas to ensure that residence halls and their support facilities are maintained and prepared in accordance with departmental goals, professional standards, codes and regulations. This specific position is more heavily weighted toward custodial tasks including fire extinguisher checks, event setup/take down, exterior windows, transport of shipping/receiving items and custodial supplies from FM main campus S&R, and graffiti removal. This position will also work together with the Grounds Housing to accomplish various other assigned tasks.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Cleaning In assigned area – 30%

  • Routine and detail cleaning of floor, walls and ceilings including use of carpet truck.
  • Detail cleaning and sanitizing of lavatories, locker rooms, shower rooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.
  • Detail cleaning of offices, lounges, stairwells, entryways, corridors.
  • Replenish lavatory supplies, empty wastebaskets and remove trash and recyclables.

Events – 15%

  • Set-up/breakdown furniture inside and outside residence hall facilities

Support Maintenance unit – 15%

  • Removing construction debris.
  • Assist Trades and construction workers by performing unskilled tasks including but not limited to: preparing work areas, performing rough repair work, tearing down structures, clearing debris from gutters/roofs, light maintenance (e.g., replacement of light fixture lamps, cleaning/replacing window coverings/screens and vent grills, replacing vent filters, replacing smoke detector and electronic lock batteries, graffiti removal, etc.), check and log fire extinguisher condition in assigned buildings, dig/fill ditches supporting utility work, cleaning and minor maintenance of associated equipment, bed lofting.

Transportation – 10%

  • Transport custodial supplies/materials/equipment/furniture between Residence Halls and Facilities Management locations.

Windows – 10%

  • Exterior window cleaning and interior cleaning of curtains, windows, blinds and other window treatments.
  • De-webbing.

Refuse and Recycling Management – 5%

  • Empty and maintain refuse/recycling disposal including green waste, paper towels, food waste, trash, and recycling.
  • Ensure proper use of refuse/recycling bins across assigned area inside and outside.
  • Work to keep waste streams separate and free of contamination.
  • Empty outdoor collection bins into larger dumpsters.
  • Pick up, hauling and bin cleaning for refuse and recycling activities cleaning and minor maintenance of associated equipment.

Grounds support – 5%

  • Hard-scape cleaning and minor repairs in collaboration with Grounds team (e.g., cleaning decks, stairs, bridges; removing debris from storm drain inlets, streets, and culvert entrances; attach signs to posts).
  • Landscape support (e.g., cleaning organic debris from landscape.
  • Hauling of debris, assist Grounds staff with digging for planting or irrigation systems).

Administrative Support and Compliance Activities – 5%

  • Participate in University-required Trainings/Meetings, Mobilize/Demobilization & Record keeping/Timekeeping Tasks

 

Other Duties as Assigned – 5%

  • Closely related to other support functions. May perform any necessary functions in the event of an emergency (i.e., earthquake, fire, flood, etc.,) that can be safely performed.
  •  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Ability to follow standard verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations required for the duties of the position.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor including moving up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a valid California class C driver's license: appropriate for operation of vehicles including two-axle, single-motor and one towed vehicle (a trailer with a gross weight of 6,000 pounds or less). 
  2. Ability to obtain University-issued forklift operators’ certificate within six months of hire.
  3. A DMV check is required to determine past driving record which will be evaluated per campus guidelines.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. General awareness of maintenance and repairs methods associated with the areas of support.
  2. General knowledge of reading Safety Data Sheets and other chemical/safety information for the tasks being performed.
  3. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  4. Ability to utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination to complete the duties required of the position including operation and maintenance of hand & power tools, forklifts, other motor vehicles.
  5. Ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  6. Ability to work independently with general supervision to accomplish assigned tasks.
  7. Ability to use maintenance management and work reporting software systems and two-way radios used to track assignments/work orders and obtain warehouse supplies.
  8. Ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required including the use of personal protective equipment.
  9. Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere while establishing effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds. 
  10. Ability to recognize and accommodate changing priorities; meet short and long term deadlines/goals; and complete routine tasks despite intermittent interruptions.  This includes managing multiple tasks and working proactively to avoid crisis and backlog.
  11. Ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.
  12. Experience working in a similar position within a college, university or institutional environment.
  13. Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a wide variety of individuals.
  14. Experience working with larger carpet extraction machinery such as a carpet truck.

Pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act, the 2021 Annual Fire Safety Report (AFSR) is now available for viewing at https://housing.humboldt.edu/sites/default/files/annual_fire_safety_report_for_housing_2021.pdf. The purpose of this report is to disclose statistics for fires that occurred within Cal Poly Humboldt's housing facilities for 2018, 2019, and 2020, and to distribute fire safety policies and procedures intended to promote safety on campus.
