(Job #542575) Student support Professional I-A, Transition and Student Success Advisor, Salary Range: $3,952 - $4,834 monthly. Hiring Range: $3,952 - $4,150 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Educational Opportunity Program Department. Position Summary:

Providing support to students during their transition from application through enrollment at Cal Poly Humboldt.

 

Key Responsibilities:

10% - Base Tracking & Processing: Data

  • The incumbent supports EOP admissions efforts by assisting in the maintenance of the annual EOP Admissions databases.  Responsibilities include:
    • Updating and monitoring daily refreshes of data used for application completion, communications, decision processing, outreach, and eligibility for each application period. 
    • Assist in preparing and maintaining electronic data sources in support of admitted and matriculating students. 
    • Assist in maintaining the EOP Orientation Data Base & New Student Registration Spreadsheet.

30% - EOP Recruitment, Admissions, & Evaluation:

  • Under coordination by the EOP/Summer Bridge Coordinator, the incumbent assists in direct outreach, processing of new EOP applications, EOP admissions review, conducts new student needs assessment, and designs individualized support plans for newly admitted students.  Duties include:
    • In collaboration with admissions outreach activities, conducts outreach to prospective EOP students, presents EOP program services, eligibility requirements, and application processes.
    • Serves as a member of the EOP Admissions Screening Committee
    • Provides advising and guidance to EOP interests, applicants and admitted students, guiding them from the point of application to Cal Poly Humboldt through Summer Bridge Orientation.  
    • Provides advising and assistance to applicants and admitted students who have unique circumstances regarding admission and/or financial aid eligibility or who have unique needs for support services.

30% - New Student Advising, Pre-Registration

  • Under coordination by the EOP/Summer Bridge Coordinator, supports all aspects of EOP New Student Pre-Registration, STEM Bridge, Summer Bridge Orientation, and Fall Programs, including collaboration with multiple offices that conduct similar student outreach and communications with newly admitted, incoming students.  These offices include admissions, orientation, housing, financial aid, registrar, advising, and college and department offices.  Duties include:
    • Assists in new student communications and assesses/advises new EOP student applicants regarding all pre-enrollment needs including financial aid application and awarding processes, on-campus and off-campus housing applications, orientation registration, Early Start English and Math, and all other admissions and orientation requirements.  Monitors student completion of each activity for newly admitted students.
    • Assists in conducting a needs assessment of newly admitted students and in consultation with EOP advisors, designs a plan of support for first-year services.
    • In collaboration with RAMP (Retention through Academic Mentoring Program) and university Learning communities, monitors first-year EOP student attendance and engagement with services and conducts academic interventions when appropriate.
    • Assists with first-year student workshops such as financial aid re-application, Spring pre-registration, and second-year housing.
    • Assists with developing and presenting academic skills curriculum and support services for new program students, with emphasis on culturally relevant and culturally responsive practices.

20% - STEM Summer Bridge/ Summer Bridge and Fall Programs:

  • Assists with program communications related to EOP orientation programs. 
  • Assists with curriculum development, programming, and instruction for the EOP STEM Bridge and EOP Summer Bridge programs.
  • Participates in hiring, selection, and training processes of Summer Bridge Student Mentors.
  • Assists with EOP Fall Bridge Botany programming

5% - Serves on various campus committees, as related to EOP admissions and academic services. 

5% - Other Duties as Assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Working knowledge of research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data.
  • Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Ability to work successfully in a dynamic and diverse setting.  Familiarity with creating equity in academic spaces by incorporating culturally relevant and culturally responsive practices in curriculum and design.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience: None required.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of admissions requirements and transfer articulation in the CSU.
  2. Knowledge of financial aid eligibility requirements. 
  3. Professional experience with admissions and transition services in higher education preferred, including experience with orientation or freshman-year programs. 
  4. Knowledge of barriers confronting low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented students.
  5. Fluency in Spanish is desirable. 
  6. At least three (3) experience in providing information and assistance in an educational setting, preferably to high school and community college students who are from non-traditional backgrounds, similar to the population served by the EOP program.
  7. At least three (3) months of demonstrated experience in helping students from a diverse range of cultural and economic backgrounds and have knowledge of issues facing non-traditional college students.
  8. Ability to interpret and apply regulations, policies, and procedures.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population both verbally and in writing.
