(Job #535701) Heavy Equipment Operator / Bus Driver, Shuttle Driver, Hiring Range: $3,656 - $3,839 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Transportation & Parking Services Department. Position Summary:

Provides shuttle service to and from designated locations both on and off campus.

 

Key Responsibilities:

45% - Provide assistance to individuals with mobility disabilities (temporary and permanent) by providing transportation to and from academic classes and activities.

  • Transport students to and from designated pick-up and drop-off points. Arrive at destinations on schedule. Interact with riders professionally at all times.
  • Assist passengers during vehicle boarding.

20% - Compliance with Rules and Regulations

  • Follow relevant safety regulations and state laws governing vehicle operation, and ensure that passengers follow safety regulations.
  • Comply with traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.

20% - Maintain safety and recording procedures:

  • Check the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order.
  • Report vehicle repairs as needed
  • Keep mileage records up-to-date
  • Research and plan for traffic, construction, and weather delays

10% - Assists Shuttle Drivers (Student Assistants) in the performance of their duties.

  • Provides general oversight serving as a resource to Shuttle Drivers (Student Assistants) in the absence of the Transportation & Parking Coordinator. To also include assistance in training Student Shuttle Drivers.

5% - Other duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Knowledge of the rules of safe driving and the provisions of the State of California Vehicle Code pertaining to operation of vehicles described in the appropriate classification; and State of California General Industrial Safety orders related to the assigned tasks of the classification, particularly those related to vehicle and equipment operation, construction methods and practices, and the lifting and moving of heavy loads.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment safely; recognize safety hazards and follow practices and laws to insure safety; follow manuals and guidelines pertaining to operation of State vehicles; load and unload vehicles correctly and safely; follow oral and written instruction; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other people; service and make routine repairs of equipment operated; and perform manual labor as required by the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated intercultural communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Equivalent to one year of paid truck driving, automotive equipment operation, or bus driving experience, including operation of heavy trucks of three axles or more, or large loaders, forklifts or other equipment; or equivalent to one year of paid or regularly assigned driving experience, preferably involving bus driving or chauffeuring, or driving a car pool or other experience driving passenger carrying vehicles.
  2. Possess appropriate license for each vehicle operated and may be required by the State of California Vehicle Code to carry appropriate certification while driving. Drivers of State-owned vehicles must maintain a good driving record* which will be checked periodically with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

*Good driving record is interpreted according to UCAM 6562 which requires each employee who drives a State-owned vehicle to certify that s/he has been issued not more than three moving violations or been responsible for more than three accidents (or any combination of more than three thereof) during the past 12 months.

Note: Any vehicle that is not used to transport persons for compensation or profit and can carry more than 10 persons but less than 15 (including the driver), is considered a ‘vanpool vehicle’ per Vehicle Code Section 233 and CVC §668. Vanpool vehicles are excluded from being classified as a ‘Commercial Vehicle’ and does not require extra licensure.

  • Ability/willingness to work/drive in various weather conditions and work schedules.
  • Have the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with the campus community and the general public, being sensitive to diverse communities; be able to verbally convey clear and precise communications, directions, and commands.
