Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, the Supervisor of Custodial Services supervises a group of assigned custodians/lead custodians to ensure the proper cleaning and maintenance of campus facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises up to 30 custodians and other personnel engaged in performing custodial duties.  Schedules staff for work in designated work zones as needed.  Provide daily direction to staff by work assignments, quality control inspections, and training.
  • Responsible for performance evaluations, initiating disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Responsible for familiarity with and adherence to the applicable collective bargaining agreement and University/Department policies and procedures.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and experience providing customer service, preferably in an institutional setting. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assists in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence.” Technical knowledge of custodial equipment and chemical products or other technical program knowledge with transferable characteristics. Knowledge of working in a union environment and understanding contract language. Capability to deal effectively with individuals and groups on and off campus, including administrators, managers, staff, customers and peers.

 Knowledge of Cal OSHA safety requirements, i.e. chemical safety, material Safety Data Sheets, personal protective equipment, back safety, CPR/First Aid (certification desirable), safe equipment operations. Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports. Ability to write at a level appropriate to the position. Ability to perform arithmetic computation where required. Ability to organize and plan work and projects including handling multiple priorities. Working knowledge and experience with computer Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software, i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Experience working in a university or large institutional setting, preferably in Facilities Management. Ability to maintain a safe work environment.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and a minimum of one year of related experience required.
  • 5+ years of experience in custodial management preferred
  • Experience supervising a large staff, including responsibility for all aspects of personnel and operation management, i.e. selecting, staffing/task assignments, training, attendance, grievances, performance appraisals, employee recognition programs, application and implementation of policies and procedures preferred
  •  Associate’s degree preferred
  •  Experience in public agency and/or higher education institution highly preferred
  •  Experience supervising under and adhering to a union contract preferred
  • Work Schedule: Tues-Fri 7AM- 3:30pm, Sat 2PM-10:30Pm

Physical Summary

Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation

CSU MPP Compensation Summary Range:  The MPP Comp Summary Range for this position is $6,286 - $9,429 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
