DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt's School of Education invites applicants for one full-time tenure track position with expertise in Special Education.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: : An earned doctorate in Special Education or related fields is required at the time of appointment. ABD will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed date of appointment.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

  • A minimum of three (3) years or equivalent of full-time experience in TK-12 schools or educational settings that serve students with mild to extensive support needs;
  • Experience and commitment to working with historically minoritized groups, including but not limited to Indigenous, LatinX, Asian, and African American communities; fostering equity based learning environments; and
  • Ability to teach a broad range of courses, across various programs, utilizing a variety of modalities and approaches to teacher preparation.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration including intra/trans/cross-departmental collaboration;
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse students, parents, colleagues, staff, and other key stakeholders in the community;
  • Potential for developing curricula/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population;
  • An understanding of the dynamics of diversity in higher education and a demonstrated ability to incorporate this understanding, as appropriate, in one’s teaching, scholarship, and service;
  • Record of, or potential for, involving students in research and scholarly activity;
  • Experience in teacher preparation programs (e.g., elementary, secondary, and special education);
  • Bilingual proficiency;
  • Potential for or record of scholarly/creative activity appropriate to rank; and
  • Knowledge of uses of technology in education.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Responsibilities may include teaching courses on special education across undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate programs and supervising student teaching/fieldwork; teaching other undergraduate or graduate courses within the candidate's areas of expertise; taking a leadership role in the Special Education Credential Program; and participating in relevant scholarly, creative, and professional service activities.

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and service to the University, department, larger profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: participation in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Typical teaching responsibility for faculty in the School of Education is 12 units per semester. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

Cal Poly Humboldt also continues to build unique and innovative learning opportunities for students, bridging the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities. Humboldt is a leader in “learning communities” that build relationships between students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community. These communities incorporate environmental and social responsibility.

GENERAL INFORMATION: From its beginning as a Normal School in 1913 to Cal Poly Humboldt's credential programs today, the University has been continuously involved in the preparation of education professionals. The School of Education consists of an Integrated Liberal Studies Elementary Education program, four accredited credential programs (Administrative Services, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and Special Education), and a M.A. in Education.  Cal Poly Humboldt has excellent working relationships with regional schools and has prepared many of the local teachers, administrators, and school psychologists. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi’ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff many from local area California Indian tribes. Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP).
